About the Bombardier Global Express

The Bombardier Global Express (and the longer-range Global XRS) is the original ultra-long-range Global — the aircraft that launched the segment in 1999 with ~6,000 nm range, a full stand-up cabin and the BR710 engine. The XRS (2006) added extra fuel and range (~6,300 nm). The Global Express is the most accessible way into a large-cabin, ultra-long-range Bombardier on the used market — older avionics than the 6000/6500, but the same airframe lineage and global support.

Buying a Used Bombardier Global Express

Buying a Bombardier Global Express is about the engines, maintenance programs and avionics as much as the airframe. Engine and airframe hourly-maintenance programs transfer with the aircraft and materially change both price and risk.

What to check before buying

  • Engine status & program — time to overhaul/MPI and whether the engines are enrolled on an hourly maintenance program (the biggest value driver on any jet).
  • Airframe program & inspections — scheduled (Doc) inspections, airframe/parts programs and total cycles.
  • Avionics & mandates — a modern glass flight deck plus required mandates (ADS-B, FANS) raise value and capability.
  • Damage history & logbooks — complete, gap-free records and a clean accident history protect resale.
  • Pre-buy inspection — a full pre-buy at a type-authorised service centre before money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bombardier Global Express

What known issues did the original Bombardier Global Express have?
Early-production Global Express aircraft suffered from freezing water, sanitation, and fuel lines when stored outside in cold climates—retrofitted heated lines largely fixed this. Pilots complained about excessive nuisance EICAS messages (garbage CAS alerts) from the avionics system. These issues were progressively addressed through service bulletins and ultimately resolved in the XRS and Global 6000 successors.
How much does it cost to operate a Bombardier Global Express?
The Global Express costs roughly $3.4M-$3.6M annually at 300-325 hours. Hourly variable costs run ~$7,000 including fuel (Rolls-Royce BR710 engines burn ~480 GPH), maintenance ($2,070/hr 5-year average), and crew. Fixed costs add ~$750K/year for hangar, insurance, management, and training. Engine program enrollment at $400-$600/flight-hour is essential to smooth cash flow.
Is the original Global Express still competitive with newer ultra-long-range jets?
The Global Express offers 6,000+ nm range and Mach 0.89 cruise, still competitive on paper. But pre-owned values have declined significantly—now trading well under $10M—because cabin technology, fuel efficiency, and avionics lag behind the Global 7500 and G700. Buyers get ultra-long-range capability at a fraction of new-jet pricing, but must budget for avionics upgrades and aging-airframe maintenance.
