Socata TBM 700 Aircraft 2000s

Originally built by SOCATA, now part of Daher (TBM series).

2000s single-engine turboprops include PC-12 NG (entered production 2008), TBM 850/900, Piper Meridian/M500. PT6A reliability is unchanged exceptional. Avionics typically Honeywell Apex (PC-12), Garmin G1000 (Meridian) or Pro Line 21. Mid-life airframes with current engine programs and modern systems.

The Socata TBM 700 (1990-2003 Socata production, transitional 2003-2006 EADS Socata era) is the founding aircraft of the modern single-engine turboprop owner-pilot segment. Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-64 turbine with 700 shaft horsepower, pressurised cabin to FL310, ~300 kt cruise, six-seat cabin. The TBM 700 transformed the owner-pilot high-performance segment by delivering pressurised single-engine turboprop capability at acquisition costs that put it within reach of accomplished private pilots. Over 300 TBM 700s were produced over the Socata/early-EADS era. The 700 remains a capable cross-country single-engine turboprop today with proper engine program enrollment, mandate compliance and corrosion-free airframe.

Buying a Used Socata TBM 700

Buying a Socata TBM 700 comes down to a focused pre-purchase checklist — here is what matters most on this model:

What to check before buying

  • PT6A-64 engine status — older PT6 generation than the PT6A-66D in later TBMs; verify hot section inspection cycles, overhaul history, and engine program enrollment status (Pratt & Whitney ESP).
  • Airframe age — 20-35 year airframes; verify corrosion inspection, hangared maintenance history and any damage history thoroughly.
  • Avionics retrofit history — most active TBM 700s have undergone significant avionics upgrades (Garmin GTN/GTX, Avidyne, ADS-B Out). Verify what's installed and software currency.
  • Mandate compliance — ADS-B Out, RVSM, FANS if international — typically retrofitted, verify status on each individual aircraft.
  • Variant identification — 700A vs 700B vs 700C have different equipment baselines and MTOW; verify which you're buying.
  • TBM Care service history — Daher's TBM Care network still supports 700s; verify service history continuity.

Which 700? A late-production TBM 700B or 700C with current Garmin avionics, ESP-enrolled engine, mandate compliance and clean airframe is the practical buy. Earlier 700As require more investment for modern operational use but represent the value-entry to TBM ownership.
