About Socata Aircraft Company

Socata (Société de Construction d'Avions de Tourisme et d'Affaires) was the French general aviation manufacturer, founded 1966 as a Sud-Aviation subsidiary, best known for two distinct product lines: the **TBM 700** single-engine turboprop (1990-2003) that founded the modern owner-pilot turboprop segment, and the **TB-series piston singles** (TB-9 Tampico, TB-10/TB-200 Tobago, TB-20/TB-21 Trinidad) — a family of low-wing four-to-five-seat singles produced from the late 1970s through the 2000s. Socata's aviation division was acquired by EADS in 2000 (renamed EADS Socata) and subsequently by Daher in 2008. Modern TBM aircraft (TBM 850 and later) and the Kodiak utility turboprop are Daher products; the original Socata-era TBM 700 and the TB piston line remain the Socata heritage. For the modern line, see [Daher](/manufacturers/daher).

Frequently Asked Questions — Socata

Is Socata the same as Daher?

Yes. SOCATA (Societe de Construction d Aeronefs de Tarbes et d Aquitaine) was acquired by the Daher industrial group and is now marketed as Daher. The TBM turboprop series — originally SOCATA TBM 700, then TBM 850, 900, 930, 940, and now TBM 960 — all carry the same DNA. The Tobago and Trinidad piston singles were also SOCATA products. On AeroGurus, older aircraft appear under the SOCATA name while newer production carries the Daher brand. Parts and support are continuous regardless of nameplate.

Socata TBM vs Pilatus PC-12 — which turboprop is better?

The TBM 960 is faster (330 kts vs 290 kts for the PC-12) and cheaper to buy ($4.3M vs $6.8M new). The PC-12 has nearly three times the cabin volume, much greater payload, a large cargo door, and better short-field performance. Operating costs are similar: TBM at $1,762/hr vs PC-12 at $1,783/hr (at similar utilization). Choose the TBM for speed and owner-pilot efficiency. Choose the PC-12 for passenger capacity, cargo flexibility, and utility versatility.

How fast is the Socata TBM?

The TBM series is the fastest certified single-engine turboprop in the world. The latest TBM 960 cruises at 330 knots (380 mph) — faster by 60+ knots than the Pilatus PC-12 or Piper M600. At recommended cruise, fuel burn is 57 gallons/hour of Jet-A. The TBM 930 cruises at 323 knots. This performance rivals many light jets at a fraction of the operating cost. The TBM 960 also features HomeSafe emergency autoland technology — the system can automatically land the airplane if the pilot is incapacitated.

How much does a used Socata TBM cost?

Used SOCATA/Daher TBM prices vary by generation. The TBM 700 (original) trades at $800,000-$1.2 million. The TBM 850 averages approximately $2.3 million. The TBM 900 averages approximately $3.1 million. Newer TBM 930/940/960 models command $3.5-5.5 million. On AeroGurus, we list SOCATA TBM models across multiple generations, giving buyers the ability to compare price vs. features across the entire TBM lineage.
