About the Piper Archer

The Piper Archer (PA-28-181) is the 180 hp version of the Cherokee — generally considered the best all-round four-seat single in the Piper line. Its Lycoming O-360 cruises around 125 knots with a useful load that takes four adults and meaningful baggage. Still in production today as the Archer LX (Garmin G1000) and DX (diesel), the Archer has the longest model life in the PA-28 family and the largest used market.

Buying a Used Piper Archer

Buying a Piper Archer comes down to a focused pre-purchase checklist — here is what matters most on this model:

What to check before buying

  • Wing-spar AD — the PA-28 spar inspection is mandatory; confirm currency and clean fatigue assessment.
  • Generation/model — Archer II/III variants differ in panel, weight and minor refinements; the LX/DX/TX (post-2010) are factory glass-cockpit modernised versions.
  • Lycoming O-360 engine time — time since overhaul is the dominant recurring cost.
  • Avionics — Garmin G1000 (LX) or retrofit glass meaningfully raises value over a steam-gauge panel.
  • Corrosion & logbooks — older airframes need full corrosion checks and complete records.

Which Archer? A late Archer II or III is the value sweet-spot; a factory LX (G1000) is the most modern option but commands a significant premium. Early carburetted PA-28-180s are the cheapest but older.
