About the Robinson R44

The Robinson R44 is the world's best-selling 4 seater helicopter — a four-seat (four-seater), single-engine piston aircraft and the most popular civil helicopter of the modern era, with more than 6,000 built. Introduced as the Astro in 1993, it evolved through the hydraulically controlled Raven I (carbureted 225 hp), the fuel-injected Raven II (245 hp), the float-equipped Clipper I and Clipper II, and the two-seat Cadet trainer.

All variants share the same basic two-blade rotor airframe and a 2,200-hour / 12-year overhaul cycle (2,400 hours for the Cadet), making the R44 a global benchmark for private ownership, training and light utility work. Used prices range from around $50,000 for an older Astro to over $700,000 for a low-time Raven II.

Buying a Used Robinson R44

Every Robinson R44 faces a mandatory 2,200-hour overhaul, so the single biggest factor in used price is how much time remains before that overhaul is due — a fresh-overhaul airframe can be worth a large share of the $150,000 overhaul cost more than one approaching its limit.

What to check before buying

  • Time to overhaul — hours and years remaining to the 2,200-hour limit; this dominates resale value more than total time.
  • Logbook completeness — continuous, gap-free maintenance records; missing logs cut value and complicate financing.
  • Damage history — any prior accident, hard landing or blade strike; cross-check the registration against accident databases.
  • Avionics — a glass panel vs steam gauges materially changes price.
  • Pre-buy inspection — always commission an independent inspection by a type-experienced mechanic before money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions — Robinson R44

How much does a Robinson R44 cost?
A new R44 Raven II runs about $370,000-$465,000. Used prices vary widely by variant, hours and avionics — see the live price range and median above; a well-equipped, low-time Raven II typically sits toward the upper end of the used market.
What does it cost to operate an R44 per hour?
Approximately $200-$350 per hour, including fuel, reserves and contributions to the 2,200-hour overhaul.
How fast is the R44?
Cruise speed about 110 knots / 126 mph, range about 300 nautical miles. The Raven II's fuel-injected Lycoming IO-540 gives better high-altitude performance than the carburetted Raven I.
How many seats does the R44 have?
4 seats (pilot plus 3 passengers).
What's the difference between Raven I and Raven II?
Raven I uses a carburetted Lycoming O-540 engine; Raven II has a more powerful fuel-injected IO-540-AE1A5 (245 hp continuous), better hot-and-high performance, and higher gross weight. The Raven II is the current production variant.
What are the R44 variants?
Current production: R44 Raven II and R44 Cadet (two-seat trainer based on the R44 airframe). Past variants: R44 Astro, R44 Raven I, R44 Clipper I, R44 Clipper II (floats).
Is the R44 a good first helicopter for owners?
Yes - the R44 is the most popular owner-flown private and light-commercial helicopter. It's easier to fly than the R22 and significantly cheaper to operate than a turbine like the R66.
How reliable is the Robinson R44?
Very reliable when maintained per Robinson's schedule. Mandatory 12-year / 2,200-hour overhauls address engine, rotor and airframe components, and resale value tracks airframe time closely.
How much does it cost to insure a Robinson R44?
Robinson R44 insurance typically runs about 2-4% of the hull value per year for private owners — roughly $8,000-$20,000 annually on a $350,000-$450,000 aircraft — plus liability coverage. Premiums depend heavily on the pilot's total and make-specific hours, ratings, intended use (private vs. training or commercial), and basing. Low-time pilots and training operations pay materially more.
Can you finance a Robinson R44?
Yes. Specialist aircraft lenders finance piston helicopters like the R44, usually with 15-20% down and 15-20 year terms, at rates tied to prime plus a margin. Approval normally requires a satisfactory pre-buy inspection, a clear title and logbook history, and proof of insurance. Many buyers also use the R44's strong resale value to secure better terms.
