← Piper Saratoga family

The Piper Lance (PA-32R) is the retractable-gear PA-32 — a 300 hp Lycoming IO-540 six-seat single produced 1976-1979, with a T-tail on the Lance II. It cruises in the high 150s of knots and trades the Cherokee Six's fixed-gear simplicity for ~15 kt more speed. The Saratoga SP succeeded it with a conventional tail and refined systems.

What to check before buying

Frequently Asked Questions — Piper Lance

What is the difference between a Piper Lance and a Saratoga?
Both are retractable PA-32 six-seaters with the 300 hp Lycoming IO-540. The Lance came first and uses the older Hershey-bar/straight wing (the Lance II added a T-tail); the Saratoga SP that replaced it has a tapered, semi-tapered wing for better low-speed handling and a more modern cabin and panel.
Why does the Piper Lance II have a T-tail?
Piper moved the Lance II to a T-tail in the late 1970s, in line with several Piper designs of that era. It is a recognizable feature but adds nothing to performance, and some pilots prefer the earlier conventional-tail Lance for its more familiar low-speed pitch feel.
How fast is a Piper Lance and is the turbo worth it?
A normally aspirated Lance cruises around 150-160 knots. The Turbo Lance II holds power to higher altitudes for faster true airspeeds and better performance at high-density-altitude airports, at the cost of added turbocharger maintenance — worth it mainly if you regularly fly high or out of hot, high fields.
