Learjet 55 Aircraft 1980s

Learjet, produced under Bombardier Aviation.

1980s heavy jets include Gulfstream III/IV (early), Hawker 800 (early), Falcon 900 (early), Challenger 600/601. Rolls-Royce Tay, BR710 (predecessors) and TFE731 engines from this era are proven; airframes are heavily mandate-upgraded by now. Two-crew operations standard; recurrent training requirements unchanged from modern equivalents. Pre-buy must include thorough mandate- compliance audit and engine-program enrollment verification.

The Learjet 55 (nicknamed "Longhorn" for the distinctive winglets) is the midsize Learjet that preceded the 60 — produced 1981-1987 with twin Garrett TFE731-3A engines, stand-up cabin and cruise around 460 kt. The 55 brought stand-up cabin comfort to the Learjet line for the first time; the 55B/C were minor variants. As an older midsize Learjet, the 55 is the most affordable way into a stand-up-cabin Learjet — but mandate upgrades, engine costs and parts availability are significant considerations.

Buying a Used Learjet 55

Buying a Learjet 55 comes down to a focused pre-purchase checklist — here is what matters most on this model:

What to check before buying

TFE731-3A engine condition; mandate upgrades; cabin refurb; corrosion; parts (older midsize, thinner support than 60). vs 60: the 60 is the modernised successor with PW305 engines and better systems; the 55 is the older, cheaper midsize Learjet.

Frequently Asked Questions — Learjet 55

What are the main problems with the Learjet 55?
Avionics obsolescence is the primary issue — production ended in 1990 and original systems are increasingly unsupported. Fuel system interconnect switches can cause wing fuel imbalance. Main door electric lock mechanisms are problematic. At 220 gph fuel burn, operating costs run $2,750/hr — roughly $800-1,000 more per hour than the newer Learjet 60.
Is the Learjet 55 a viable purchase in the current market?
With only 147 built and a shrinking parts base, the 55 is approaching end-of-service for many operators. Fixed costs of $300-450K/yr and declining resale values make it a depreciating asset. However, for operators who need midsize jet performance on a very tight acquisition budget, a well-maintained 55 with updated avionics can serve for several more years.
What does the Learjet 55 offer that newer jets dont?
Raw speed and climb performance — the 55 can reach FL510 and cruises at 460+ knots. The stand-up cabin is roomier than the Learjet 31A. For operators in niche roles (air ambulance, organ transport) where speed to altitude matters more than cabin comfort, the 55 still has utility. But for most missions, a Citation XLS or Phenom 300 is more practical.
