About the Bell 407

The Bell 407 is the four-blade, higher-performance evolution of the JetRanger lineage — a single-turbine seven-seat helicopter powered by a Rolls-Royce 250-C47B/C47E engine, with more power, faster cruise and a noticeably smoother ride than the 206 it succeeded as Bell's flagship single. Introduced in 1996 and still in production today as the 407GXi (Garmin G1000H cockpit), the 407 is a fixture of EMS, utility, law enforcement, corporate and private flying worldwide. Cruise around 130 knots; the four-blade rotor gives a quieter, more refined ride than the 206's two-blade system.

Buying a Used Bell 407

Buying a Bell 407 centres on its turbine engine(s) — time to overhaul, hot-section history and any engine maintenance program — alongside airframe hours and cycles.

What to check before buying

  • Turbine engine status — hot-section and overhaul time, trend monitoring and whether the engine is on a maintenance program.
  • Airframe hours & cycles — high-utilisation turboprops accumulate cycles quickly; cycles can matter more than hours.
  • Equipment — cargo pod, floats/amphibian gear, de-ice and avionics all affect value.
  • Corrosion & logbooks — continuous records and a corrosion inspection, especially on float or marine-operated aircraft.
  • Pre-buy inspection — commission an independent pre-buy by a type-experienced shop.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bell 407

What are the known maintenance issues on the Bell 407?
The most documented issues involve the KAflex engine-to-transmission driveshaft (a 2011 service bulletin mandated a new driveshaft with 1,250-hour overhaul interval), hydraulic system maintenance (revised after a 2011 AD), and tail rotor adapter shaft inspections (enhanced after a 2015 incident). Despite these, most Bell 407 accidents are attributed to human error, not design flaws.
What does it cost to operate a Bell 407 per year?
Annual budget is approximately 93,000 at 300 hours/year (,310/hr all-in). Variable costs include fuel at 20/hr (40 GPH Jet-A), maintenance reserves, and parts. Fixed costs (hangar, insurance, pilot salary) add 90K/yr. The Rolls-Royce 250-C47B engine is well-proven but hot-section inspections at 1,750 hours run 0K-20K.
Is the Bell 407 a good helicopter for utility and charter work?
The Bell 407 excels in utility roles — EMS, law enforcement, corporate transport, and tour operations. It seats 7 (including pilot), cruises at 120 kts, and has a 337 nm range. The 407GXi variant adds a Garmin G1000H NXi glass cockpit and FADEC engine control. Over 1,600 Bell 407s have been delivered worldwide, ensuring strong parts availability and resale.
