The Robinson R44 Astro was the original production R44, FAA type-certificated in December 1992 with first deliveries in 1993. It introduced Robinson's four-seat piston design with a carbureted Lycoming O-540 of 225 hp but, unlike later Ravens, did not have hydraulically boosted controls.
Produced until about 2000 when it was superseded by the Raven I, the Astro is now the most affordable way into R44 ownership — used examples typically sell between $50,000 and $150,000 — though buyers should weigh heavier control forces and the cost of any overdue 2,200-hour / 12-year overhaul.
