Key price factors: engine time to overhaul, year and airframe hours, avionics, damage history and logbook completeness — see the buying guide below for the full pre-purchase checklist.

Buying a Used Icon A5

When buying a Icon A5, the biggest value drivers are engine time since overhaul, maintenance-record completeness, damage history and avionics.

What to check before buying

  • Engine time to overhaul — hours and years remaining drive price more than total airframe time.
  • Logbook completeness — continuous, gap-free maintenance records protect value.
  • Damage history — any prior accident or incident; cross-check the registration against accident databases.
  • Avionics — a modern glass panel vs legacy steam gauges materially changes price.
  • Pre-buy inspection — always commission an independent inspection by a type-experienced mechanic before money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions — Icon A5

Is the ICON A5 safe to fly?
Every A5 accident to date has been attributed to pilot error — no mechanical failures have contributed to any crash. The aircraft includes a spin-resistant airframe and angle-of-attack indicator. However, the A5s mission profile (low-altitude water flying) inherently increases risk. Two fatal accidents in 2017 involved aggressive maneuvering near terrain and water.
What are the real costs and limitations of A5 ownership?
New A5s list around $400K. The Rotax 912 iS engine burns 5 gph but has a 2,000-hr TBO. As a Light Sport Aircraft, it is limited to 1,320 lbs gross weight, single engine, and daytime VFR only. Folding wings allow trailer storage, eliminating hangar costs. But insurance is expensive due to the small fleet and amphibious operations.
Should I be concerned about ICON as a company?
ICON has faced financial instability, ownership changes, and production delays since its founding. Demand has been lower than projected. Before buying, verify warranty support, parts availability, and service center access in your region. The aircraft itself is well-engineered, but company viability affects long-term support and resale value.
