About the Bell 505

The Bell 505 Jet Ranger X is Bell's modern light single-turbine — a clean-sheet five-seat helicopter introduced in 2017, designed as the spiritual successor to the JetRanger. Powered by a Safran Arrius 2R turboshaft and equipped from the factory with a Garmin G1000H glass cockpit, the 505 is the newest entry point into Bell turbine ownership. It is popular for training, private flying and light commercial operations. As a newer aircraft, most 505s on the used market are low-time and trade close to new prices.

Buying a Used Bell 505

Buying a Bell 505 centres on its turbine engine(s) — time to overhaul, hot-section history and any engine maintenance program — alongside airframe hours and cycles.

What to check before buying

  • Turbine engine status — hot-section and overhaul time, trend monitoring and whether the engine is on a maintenance program.
  • Airframe hours & cycles — high-utilisation turboprops accumulate cycles quickly; cycles can matter more than hours.
  • Equipment — cargo pod, floats/amphibian gear, de-ice and avionics all affect value.
  • Corrosion & logbooks — continuous records and a corrosion inspection, especially on float or marine-operated aircraft.
  • Pre-buy inspection — commission an independent pre-buy by a type-experienced shop.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bell 505

What makes the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X stand out?
The Bell 505 (2017+) is the modern replacement for the legendary 206 JetRanger — Safran Arrius 2R engine with FADEC, Garmin G1000H glass cockpit, and a flat-floor cabin seating 4 passengers. Single-engine simplicity with turbine reliability. New price around $2M. Operating costs of $400-500/hr are competitive with the Robinson R66. It is the entry-level turbine helicopter for the 2020s.
Bell 505 vs. Robinson R66 — which is the better value?
The R66 costs less ($400-600K new vs. $2M for the 505) and has lower operating costs. The 505 offers a larger cabin, FADEC engine management, glass cockpit, and flat-floor loading. For commercial operations (tours, charter), the 505 cabin and avionics justify the premium. For personal use and training, the R66 remains the economy choice. Both are excellent single-engine turbine helicopters.
