About the Cessna 340A
The Cessna 340 is the only pressurized piston twin that Cessna produced with six seats and cabin-class comfort below the 414 — a twin-engine, pressurized, all-metal aircraft powered by two Continental TSIO-520-K/NB engines (285-310 HP each). Produced from 1972 to 1984 with over 1,287 built, the 340/340A cruises at 200 KTAS at FL200 with a pressurization differential of 3.8-4.2 psi. The 340 shares the 300-series wing and many systems with the unpressurized 310, but adds a pressurized fuselage that transforms the ownership experience.
The 340A (1976-1984) is the most desirable variant — it introduced the TSIO-520-NB engines (310 HP), improved pressurization, and eliminated the tip tanks in favor of integral wet wing fuel cells. Early 340s (1972-1975) retain the tip tanks and less powerful TSIO-520-K engines (285 HP).
Buying advice. All pressurized piston twin concerns apply. TSIO-520 engines require vigilant monitoring — check turbocharger bootstrap condition, exhaust system for cracks, and engine case for through-bolt corrosion. Pressurization system integrity (cabin outflow valve, door seal, windshield seal) must be verified during a pressure test. Wing spar carry-through corrosion is a known issue. RAM Series IV/VII engine conversions (TSIO-520-EB, 310-335 HP) are popular upgrades that improve performance and value.
Market. Cessna 340: $80,000-$140,000. 340A: $100,000-$220,000. RAM-converted 340A with modern avionics: $150,000-$300,000. A Cessna 340 for sale offers the most affordable pressurized twin-engine aircraft available — a legitimate IFR cross-country machine.
Produced 1976–1984.
