In September 1992, 74 Squadron at RAF Wattisham hosted a mini ‘Tiger meet’, the first and only one to be held at the base. Many units from across NATO participated, including Hawks from 4 FTS at Valley who would assume the 74 Squadron mantle later in the year when the F-4 Phantoms were retired from RAF service. For this event XX226 was chosen to have a unique one off special livery applied featuring a large Tigers head on the fin and 74 Sqn markings along the intakes.
This striking ‘Tiger meet’ livery applied to this very Hawk in 1992 has since become the subject of limited edition models including: a diecast by Matchbox, Revell 1:32 kit, 1:100 scale Italeri Dreamwings Collection model and Armour Collection 1:100 diecast.
In 1993 XX226 was chosen as the RAF Valley Hawk solo display jet and once again featured a special livery for the display season. This time sporting a Red Dragon Rampant holding a Portcullis on the fin, the main part of the station’s badge. The wording ”RAF Valley Hawk Solo Display 1993” was applied along the sides of the fuselage in large letters and Rolls Royce Logos either side of the intakes. The display pilot for that year was Flt Lt Geraint Herbert and his name was stencilled underneath the cockpit.
This aircraft suffered minor damage to the nose in Nov 2006 when it took the barrier after an aborted takeoff at RNAS Yeovilton. The nose has been professionally repaired by an ex-RAF RSS trained airframe fitter.
