About the Robinson R22 Beta II

The Robinson R22 Beta II (1995–present) is the current production R22: a two-seat trainer with the larger Lycoming O-360-J2A engine derated for sea level, giving better hover performance at altitude and in heat than earlier R22s. A governor and carburetor-heat assist are standard.

It is the world's benchmark primary helicopter trainer. Used Beta II prices typically run $150,000–$350,000 depending on year and hours remaining to the 2,200-hour / 12-year overhaul.

Buy it if you want the newest R22 airframe and altitude capability; consider the Beta for the same mission at a lower used price.

Buying a Used Robinson R22 Beta II

Every Robinson R22 Beta II faces a mandatory 2,200-hour overhaul, so the single biggest factor in used price is how much time remains before that overhaul is due — a fresh-overhaul airframe can be worth a large share of the $60,000 overhaul cost more than one approaching its limit.

What to check before buying

  • Time to overhaul — hours and years remaining to the 2,200-hour limit; this dominates resale value more than total time.
  • Logbook completeness — continuous, gap-free maintenance records; missing logs cut value and complicate financing.
  • Damage history — any prior accident, hard landing or blade strike; cross-check the registration against accident databases.
  • Avionics — a glass panel vs steam gauges materially changes price.
  • Pre-buy inspection — always commission an independent inspection by a type-experienced mechanic before money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions — Robinson R22 Beta II

Is the Robinson R22 safe for helicopter training?
The R22 is the worlds most popular training helicopter, but it demands respect. Its low-inertia rotor system means RPM management in autorotation is more critical than in larger helicopters. Robinson created a mandatory safety course for instructors after early accident rates. Modern R22 training programs have strong safety records when pilots follow Robinson operating procedures, especially the low-RPM warning horn.
What does it cost per hour to fly a Robinson R22 Beta II?
Robinson factory estimates 90/hr all-in at 500 hours/year. At lower utilization (100-200 hrs/yr), costs rise to 00-00/hr due to fixed costs spread over fewer hours. Fuel is about 4/hr (9 GPH avgas). Insurance for training operations runs ,000-2,000/yr. Rental/instruction rates at flight schools average 50-00/hr wet with instructor.
What is the overhaul schedule and cost for an R22 Beta II?
Mandatory 2,200-hour/12-year factory overhaul costs approximately 75,000-00,000. This is a complete teardown and rebuild at Robinson or an authorized center. At 500 hrs/yr, that is roughly 0-0/hr in reserves. The Lycoming O-360 engine has a separate 2,000-hour TBO with overhaul running 5,000-5,000. Always check remaining time to overhaul when buying.
