About IAI Aircraft Company

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), headquartered in Ben Gurion, Israel, is one of the largest defense and aerospace companies in the region. In business aviation, IAI is best known for the Westwind (1124) and Astra (1125) series of midsize jets, as well as the Galaxy (later Gulfstream G200) and G280 programs developed in partnership with Gulfstream. The Westwind was one of the first Israeli-designed business jets, entering service in 1965.

Pre-owned IAI Westwind models typically trade between $400,000 and $1.2 million, while Astra SPX models range from $1-3 million. The Galaxy/G200 represents IAI's most successful business jet, combining a wide-body cabin with transcontinental range. Buyers should verify engine program enrollment (Honeywell TFE731 on Westwind/Astra, PW306A on Galaxy) and note that Gulfstream provides factory support for the G200 and G280 models.

Frequently Asked Questions — IAI

What are IAI Westwind and Astra business jets?

Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) produced a family of business jets starting with the 1124 Westwind (re-engined Jet Commander with Garrett TFE731 turbofans). The Westwind II improved range and systems. The 1125 Astra/Astra SP featured a new wide-body fuselage with stand-up cabin. The Astra SPX evolved into the Galaxy, later marketed as the Gulfstream G100/G150 after Gulfstream acquired the line. IAI built 442 Westwinds before switching to Astra production in 1987. On AeroGurus, we track 16 active IAI listings from 29,000 to 00,000.

Is an IAI Westwind a good buy?

The Westwind offers remarkable value: mid-1980s models are available for 00,000-00,000 — among the cheapest jets flying. Many feature auxiliary fuel tanks boosting range to 2,900 nm, and the baggage compartment holds nearly 1,000 lbs. Maintenance scheduling is based on flight hours rather than calendar time, which benefits low-utilization owners. The tradeoffs: cruise speed is modest (Mach 0.74 for the I, 0.79 for the II), the aircraft is not pretty, and 25 hull-loss accidents were recorded historically. Parts availability is adequate through the Gulfstream network.
