Introduced in 1989, the 215-knot TLS combined the stretched fuselage of the Porsche-powered Mooney PFM with the turbocharged and intercooled Textron Lycoming TIO-540-AF1A six-cylinder engine. While the engine was capable of 350 hp, Mooney limited it to 270 hp by redlining the rpm to 2,575 to provide a quieter airplane inside and out and a longer TBO of 2000 hours. The TLS included an improved Garrett AiResearch turbocharger, larger cowl cooling inlets, and a larger NACA duct leading to the intercooler to accommodate the larger turbo compressor. The turbocharger was automatically controlled by a density altitude controller, the magnetos were pressurized for smoother operation at altitude, and the ignition harness was shielded…all to ensure efficient operation at all altitudes. It also included two 70-amp alternators and dual batteries for further redundancy. In 1996, Mooney introduced the upgraded AF1B “Bravo” engine to address premature top-end engine wear when the engines were run hard. They solved the problem by adding a wet-head supplemental cooling system with oil-cooled exhaust-valve guides. This very low-time airplane was recently upgraded with a new Garmin glass panel. It has nice original paint (always hangared) and nice leather interior. It did encounter a recent prop strike on landing resulting in a new three-blade prop and engine tear-down. While the engine was OK, the owner replaced the cam, lifters, rings, and more. It’s priced at VRef, but based on engine hours of 1134. So coordinate a time with us when you can stop in to see it and take a ride! Did we mention that it’s fast!

About the Mooney M20M

The Mooney Bravo (M20M) is the turbocharged long-body Mooney that preceded the Acclaim — produced 1989-2006 with a 270 hp turbocharged Lycoming TIO-540-AF1B engine cruising around 220 knots at altitude. The first Mooney to combine the long-body airframe with a big turbo engine, the Bravo was the speed king until the Acclaim's IO-550 twin-turbo dethroned it. A characterful late-1990s high-altitude cruiser at lower used prices than the Acclaim.

Produced 1988–2007.
