Searey Aircraft
Frequently Asked Questions — Searey
What is the SeaRey and is it still being produced?
The SeaRey is an American two-seat amphibious flying boat available as both a factory-built LSA and a kit. Over 600 kits delivered worldwide. However, Progressive Aerodyne shut down production in 2024 while negotiating a sale to investors. Buyers should verify current production and support status. The SeaRey Specialist (third-party) continues to provide sales, parts, and technical support.
How does the SeaRey fly on water?
The SeaRey is a true flying boat — the hull is the fuselage, with retractable tricycle gear for land operations. Rotax 912/914 pusher engine keeps the prop clear of water spray. The compact design (two seats side-by-side) makes it one of the smallest and most affordable amphibious aircraft available. It qualifies for both LSA and experimental amateur-built categories in the US. Water handling is straightforward for pilots with basic seaplane training.
SeaRey vs ICON A5 vs Lake Buccaneer — which amphibian?
The SeaRey is the most affordable amphibian — kit versions cost a fraction of the ICON A5 or certified Lake Buccaneer. The ICON A5 offers a more polished design and spin-resistant handling but costs dramatically more and has factory support uncertainties after bankruptcy. The Lake Buccaneer/Renegade is larger and certified but older designs with higher operating costs. For recreational float flying on a budget, the SeaRey is the practical choice.
