Fournier Aircraft

Rene Fournier designed a series of elegant French motorgliders starting in the 1960s, using modified Volkswagen engines. The RF-4D (173 built by Sportavia in Germany) is a single-seat aerobatic motorglider. The RF-5B is a two-seat tandem version, semi-aerobatic with loops and spins approved. All-wooden construction with retractable center gear and folding wingtips. The Fournier is cheaper to operate than any airplane with comparable performance.

The RF-4D is described as the most honest and predictable airplane to spin — critical for aerobatic training. VW-derived power keeps fuel costs minimal. The motorglider design means excellent glide ratio when the engine is at idle. Wooden construction requires careful moisture inspection but provides a light, responsive airframe. Used Fourniers are available on the European market at modest prices, though finding qualified wood-aircraft mechanics is essential.
