Is the BRM Bristell a good light sport aircraft?
The BRM Bristell is one of the fastest LSAs on the market, cruising at 120+ knots with the Rotax 912iS engine and up to 135 knots with the Rotax 915iS. Build quality is excellent — pilots describe it as the most solid-feeling LSA they have flown. The cockpit is comfortable for cross-country flying with modern avionics options. However, there are serious safety concerns: Australia banned stall training in Bristells after multiple fatal spin/stall accidents worldwide, and a 2022 Irish investigation found the manufacturer had supplied incorrect weight-and-balance data. On AeroGurus, we track 22 active BRM listings averaging about 55,000.
What are known Bristell problems?
The most critical issue is stall/spin behavior — several fatal accidents have occurred globally, prompting Australian CASA to issue safety notices. The Rotax 915iS variant suffers from a heavy engine that limits useful load despite carbon fiber weight savings. Some newer Bristells are at maximum LSA empty weight, leaving very little payload for fuel and passengers. Factory support has been inconsistent — some owners report expensive mandatory service bulletins, and Czech Sport Aircraft (a related entity) went through bankruptcy. Prospective buyers should verify the specific model variant and check for all completed service bulletins.
