The Laser Z200 is a single-seat, mid-wing aerobatic monoplane originally designed and hand-built by the legendary aviator Leo Loudenslager. Constructed from steel tubing and clad in durable Ceconite fabric, the aircraft exemplifies the perfect blend of lightweight engineering and structural integrity. Loudenslager developed the Laser 200 through a comprehensive redesign of the Stephens Akro, with the goal of significantly improving roll rate, climb performance, and airframe strength, all while shedding unnecessary weight. His meticulous approach included removing non-essential engine material—saving around 12 pounds—and even drilling the canopy to further reduce drag. A single-piece wooden spar was introduced to form an exceptionally strong wing, fitted with extended full-span ailerons that deliver crisp, instantaneous roll response. Powering Kilo Tango is a Lycoming O-360-A4A engine, originally removed from a certified Piper PA-28 in 2016 and installed in this airframe just 62 hours of flight time ago. The engine features a solid crankshaft and fuel injection system, ensuring robust performance and reliability under extreme aerobatic loads. It's supported by a fully inverted Christen oil system and inverted fuel system, enabling sustained inverted manoeuvres without compromise. Safety and comfort in the cockpit are equally well-considered, with a Christen 5/7-point harness providing secure restraint, and an excellent bubble canopy that accommodates taller pilots with ease. By the time Loudenslager completed the redesign, only 10% of the original Akro remained. The result was a revolutionary aircraft that redefined the aerobatic landscape and directly influenced later designs such as the Extra 300, a dominant force in international competition throughout the 1990s.
