Chilton D.W. 1 Replica Classic, A remarkable racing aircraft in the 1930's, the original construction was from wood and plywood due to the lack of materials at the time and the focus on keeping construction affordable and simple.The era of Air-Racing had begun and this little racer was achieving considerably performance figures for the 1930's powered by an inline Ford engine developing 40 hp only. With some old and inaccurate plans we set about to construct this Chilton aircraft not in the original wooden construction technic, but in a full metal version. The one and only Chilton DW1 in full metal to date in the world. Maintaining the aircraft's features, classic lines, curves and appearance we redesigned, constructed and built a classic replica with some modern hidden feature's to aid for todays flight operations and requirements, such as a steerable tailwheel, differential toe brakes, telescopic suspension with costume made springs to suite the aircraft's ground handling, push-pull rod control system and a considerable size fuel tank for some serious cross-country flying as well as hydraulic disc-brakes. This Chilton replica is powered by no less than a Rotax 912, 80hp engine, fitted neatly in to the classic lines of the cowling. The overall appearance was kept as close as possible to the original plans and even the entry doors where given the classic style of the 30's. When finished this aircraft was load tested to assure it meets standard requirements in respect of flight and gust loading and stress loading.
This Racer is currently still in its bare aluminium “look", it sits to be admired “as is" or to be painted in a classic racing scheme of the Air Racing day's of the 30s and 40s.
