1941 Lockheed L-12A Electra Junior
Multi Engine Piston
Aircraft Details
Seller reportedDescription
A rare opportunity to purchase the first aircraft designed by a young aeronautical engineer hired by Lockheed in 1933... Clarence Kelly Johnson: a beautiful and historical Lockheed Electra Junior L12A! This L12A Electra Junior rolled out of the Lockheed factory in June 1941 (C/N 1287). It is almost certainly the aircraft used by director Michael Curtiz for the filming of the classic movie Casablanca the same year. Enlisted by the US Navy, she was one of the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic in 1942 and became the personal aircraft of the US admiral in charge of the North Atlantic fleet (based in England). Among other feats, she flew over the beaches of Normandy a few days after the D-Day, with Eisenhower on board, to inspect the battlefield... After, she then went on to hunt submarines with the British Coastal Command. At the end of the war, the legendary Sydney Cotton bought it for a symbolic pound (for services rendered to the Crown!) and turned it into a reconnaissance aircraft. Under the registration G-AGTL, the Lockheed carried out espionage over the Eastern Bloc throughout the 1960s. Sold by Sydney Cotton in the 1970s to a French airline, she was used as executive aircraft (registration F-BJJY) for the stars of the time between Nice, Cannes, La M le, and Corsica. The aircraft remained in storage for over a decade (owned by a millionaire aircraft enthusiast, but no longer flying) and was then recovered after his death by a French aircraft enthusiast, who had it put back in the air by English mechanics... Purchased in 2000 by the father of the current owner, she underwent two years of restoration by JC Calvet's teams in Villeneuve-sur-Lot. This was followed by several years of trouble-free operation... A second project (following a landing gear problem) was carried out by Daniel Koblet (Mobile Air Service, in Switzerland), involving the replacement of engines, propellers, and accessories, as well as the dismantling, inspection, and restoration of the landing gear and control box. The flaps were refurbished, as were the engine cowlings... The main approach was not to REBUILD the aircraft, but to keep it as a time capsule, just as it was in 1941... Some of the seats are original, as is a large part of the interior. She returned to its role as a movie star in the film Amelia, a biopic about Amelia Earhart starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, and others, filmed in 2009 in South Africa!
