VFRDescription
Beautiful Fairchild 24. Oshkosh winner with a unique military history. Built in 1941 for the Army Air Corps with a 165 hp Warner Scarab engine, N66143 was originally designated for delivery to the Royal Air Force under lend-lease as an Argus I (serial number EV730). Pearl Harbor caused the Air Corps to cancel its delivery to England and, as a UC-61 (serial number 41-38794), it spent World War II as a utility aircraft operating in the Caribbean and South America. Sold as surplus after the war, the aircraft went through several civilian owners until becoming derelict in 1968 after accumulating just 1,342 flight hours. Rescued in 1983, the aircraft was the subject of a 26 year restoration during which time a 200 hp Ranger replaced the Warner Scarab, thereby converting the 24W into a 24R. At Oshkosh 2023, N66143 was awarded the Bronze Lindy as the World War II Era Champion in the Antique category.
